Lasik is the reference technique of surgery, to get rid of glasses or contact lenses partially or completely.

This name "Lasik" or "Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis" means a cut out of the cornea with the action of an excimer laser in the thickness of the cornea.

This technique, which appeared in 1989, has supplanted almost every other techniques since 1996 :

Radial Keratotomy, which is today completely obsolete
Excimer laser which is too painful, makes the patient temporarily invalid, too aggressive for the cornea, and only used for low myopias
Intrastromal corneal ring segments which are too uncertain and only used for low myopias without astigmatism

Lasik is a procedure :

for myopic, hyperopic, astigmatic and some presbyopic patients

which is painless

where both eyes can be treated at the same time

which gives a visual recovery within a few hours

Its scope of correction is myopia. Myopes are the largest group and this operation is well known for this type of disorder.

It is also the only technique which allows to correct hyperopia and astigmatism.

Finally, in some cases, the current progress allow to correct presbyopia.
